Adopt a Patch

Launched: April 2020
Status: Still going strong today!
Back in April 2020, as the world suddenly became a quieter, slower place, Dundalk Tidy Towns launched a simple idea with a big heart: Adopt a Patch.
The concept was straightforward. Instead of waiting for organised clean-ups, what if every resident took just one small patch of their local area and made it their own? One part of a street. One road. One local green space. One litter "blackspot". No rosters. No pressure. Just people taking pride in the place they live.
From that spring in 2020 right through to today, the Adopt a Patch programme has become a quiet backbone of Dundalk's tidy transformation. Dozens of volunteers – some working alone, some in family groups, some with neighbours – have adopted patches across the town.
They litter pick. They clear weeds. They do a #2minutestreetclean on their way to the shops. And bit by bit, patch by patch, Dundalk has become cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming.
How does it work?
It couldn't be simpler:
-
Choose an area - Part of your street, a road, a local green space, or a known litter blackspot
-
Choose your time - Any day of the week, any time that suits you
-
Choose your action - A litter pick, clearing weeds, a #2minutestreetclean – whatever you can manage
-
Choose your frequency - Once a week, once a month, or whenever you pass by
That's it. No minimum hours. No formal commitment. Just doing what you can, when you can.
Why adopt a patch?
-
✅ It's flexible – Life is busy. You decide when and how often.
-
✅ It's personal – When you adopt a patch you walk past every day, you see the difference you make.
-
✅ It's contagious – One person cleaning often inspires a neighbour to do the same.
-
✅ It's long-term – Short-term clean-ups are great, but adopted patches create lasting habits.
.
Would you like to help make Dundalk a Tidy Town?
Join the volunteers who have already adopted their patch. Choose a spot that matters to you – maybe the stretch of pavement outside your house, the alleyway behind your flat, the bench where you sit with your coffee, or that one corner that always seems to collect rubbish.
Do a litter pick. Clear a few weeds. Spend two minutes making it better.
