Homemade Planters (2026)

Sustainability in Action: Homemade Planters & Fruit Trees for Dundalk Estates

Sustainability isn't just a word – it's about people, partnerships, and planting roots in our community. And this spring, Dundalk Tidy Towns witnessed sustainability in action.

From First-Time Drill Users to Community Donors

The Irish School of DIY recently hosted a Women's Beginner Adult DIY Course in Dundalk – and it was a full house! Women aged from 20 to 70 came together, many of whom had never held a drill before. By the end of the day, they had made 8 large planter pots – and then did something remarkable. They donated every single planter to Dundalk Tidy Towns. A fantastic day of learning, empowerment, and community spirit – and a perfect example of sustainability in practice.

Why Homemade Planters Matter for Community Sustainability

At Dundalk Tidy Towns, we believe that sustainable communities are built locally. Homemade planters like these are more than just containers for plants – they are:

  • Locally made: No shipping, no packaging, no carbon footprint

  • Repurposed materials: Many DIY planters use reclaimed wood or upcycled materials

  • Long-lasting: Handmade with care, they last for years – not seasons

  • Community-owned: Residents take pride in planters they know were made by neighbours

  • Encourages growing: Planters bring greenery to concrete areas, supporting biodiversity

When a woman picks up a drill for the first time and creates a planter that ends up in a local estate – that's sustainability from the ground up.

Delivering Planters & Fruit Trees to Dundalk Estates

As part of National Tree Week 2026, Dundalk Tidy Towns was delighted to deliver eight sets of fruit trees and planters set to four local residential in Dundalk which were Pearse Park, Fairy Garden, Fatimah Estate and Marian Park. Each of the residential community received two sets each.

This project was delivered as part of National Tree Week 2026 – whose theme was "Growing a Greener Future Together". The combination of:

  • 🌳 Fruit trees for long-term food and shade

  • 🌱 Homemade planters for immediate colour and greenery

...creates a sustainable, lasting impact in each estate. Residents can grow flowers, herbs, or even vegetables in their new planters – while the fruit trees mature over the years.
