Ramparts Pollinator Beds
Ramparts Pollinator Beds – A Long-Term Biodiversity Success Story
Since 2021, the Ramparts Pollinator Beds have been a shining example of what happens when a community commits to biodiversity.
What started as a funded project has grown into a long-term project running ever since – and it just keeps getting better.
History - how it begin
The Ramparts Pollinator Beds began in 2021 as a biodiversity project funded by Louth Leader Partnership. The goal was simple: transform an ordinary green space into a haven for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
With funding secured, Dundalk Tidy Towns got to work preparing the ground, selecting native pollinator-friendly plants, and planting the very first beds. In the years since, the project has been lovingly maintained by volunteers and local partners – including Adam from PMR Groundcare, whose recent work has brought an amazing transformation.
What started as a funded initiative in 2021 has become a long-term, living project – now a beloved feature of the Ramparts and a lasting symbol of Dundalk's commitment to biodiversity.
Why Pollinator Beds matter?
Pollinator beds are specially planted areas filled with nectar-rich, native flowers designed to attract and support bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other essential insects.
🐝 Bees are in decline: Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change have caused pollinator populations to drop dramatically
🌸 Food source: Pollinator beds provide vital nectar and pollen, especially in urban areas where wildflowers are scarce
🍎 Food for us: Over 75% of the world's food crops – including apples, strawberries, and tomatoes – depend on pollinators
🦋 Biodiversity: A healthy pollinator population supports birds, bats, and other wildlife higher up the food chain
🌍 Climate resilience: Diverse, pollinator-friendly plants create stronger, more resilient local ecosystems
A simple action with big impact
Planting a pollinator bed – even a small one – is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help nature. Every flower is a meal. Every bed is a lifeline.
Save the bees. Plant the flowers. Support the pollinators. 🐝🌸💚
