Navvy Bank Walk

Navvy Bank Bird Hide Upgrade – A New Chapter for Dundalk's Hidden Gem

Project Commencement: 16th March – 30th March 2026

After years of neglect, the Bird Hide at Navvy Bank is finally getting the attention it deserves. Thanks to a wonderful collaboration between Dundalk Tidy Towns and Tús – the community work placement initiative – upgrade works will commence on Monday 16th March 2026 and run until 30th March 2026.

This project has been made possible with the helpful support of Louth Local Development.

From Neglected to Renewed

For too long, the bird hide at Navvy Bank has fallen into disrepair – a forgotten facility in one of Dundalk's most beautiful natural spaces. But that is about to change.

Working alongside Tús, Dundalk Tidy Towns is leading a full upgrade of the facility. During the two-week works, vehicles will access the site via the Navvy Bank Walk. We ask all walkers to be aware that vehicles may be on the Bank at various times of the day until approximately 30th March. We thank everyone for their understanding.

More Than Just a Bird Hide

This renewed facility will serve multiple purposes for the people of Dundalk:

  1. Bird watching hide - A peaceful spot to observe Navvy Bank's rich birdlife

  2. Rest spot for Tús workers - A sheltered place for Tús participants working on the Navvy Bank

  3. Education hub for students - An outdoor classroom for learning about biodiversity and birds

  4. Tourism attraction - A unique draw for nature lovers visiting Navvy Bank

A Huge Education Purpose

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the educational potential. The upgraded bird hide will become a dedicated education hub where:

  • 🦆 School students can learn about wetland birds and local biodiversity

  • 🦉 College groups can conduct field studies and bird counts

  • 📚 Community groups can host nature workshops and wildlife talks

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families can introduce children to the wonders of birdwatching

Navvy Bank is home to a surprising variety of bird species. From herons and swans to kingfishers and waders, the hide will offer a front-row seat to nature – and a lasting educational resource for generations of Dundalk students.

A Rest Spot for Tús Workers

The bird hide will also serve a practical purpose as a rest spot for Tús workers based on Navvy Bank. A warm, dry, sheltered place to take a break – making their valuable work on the bank that little bit easier. Tús participants contribute enormously to our community. This hide is a small way of saying thank you – while also supporting their wellbeing during the working day.

An Attraction for Navvy Bank

Navvy Bank is already a much-loved walking route for Dundalk residents. This upgraded bird hide will add a new attraction – drawing not only local nature lovers but also visitors from across Louth and beyond. Birdwatchers, photographers, families, and school groups will all have a reason to visit Navvy Bank. And with more visitors comes more appreciation for this special place – and a stronger incentive to keep it clean, safe, and welcoming for wildlife and people alike.
