Navvy Bank Walk

New Information Panels Unveiled at Navvy Bank – July 2025

If you've taken a stroll along the Navvy Bank recently, you may have noticed something new.

Two brand new information panels have been installed – and they are already proving a hit with walkers, birdwatchers, and history lovers alike.

These new panels did not appear by accident. They are the result of teamwork and dedication. Thanks to everyone who helped with the installation, and Padraic from PH7 Design, for his expert help with the design of each panel, ensuring they are both beautiful and informative. Also, shout out to Louth County Council for the ongoing support.

What's on the New Panels?

  • 🐦 Birds of Dundalk Bay - Beautiful photographs of the bird species you can spot along the bank – from herons and swans to kingfishers and wading birds.

  • 📜 History of the Navvy Bank - The fascinating story of the 'navvies' who hand-dug this 1.3-mile embankment during the 1840s, including its role in providing employment during the Great Hunger

Why These Panels Matter

For years, the Navvy Bank has been a much-loved walking route for locals – but few knew the stories behind it.

  • 🐦 The bird panel helps visitors identify the rich variety of birdlife in Dundalk Bay, turning a simple walk into a wildlife adventure.

  • 📜 The history panel tells the story of the Irish navvies – strong, hardworking men who helped build Britain's canals and railways, and who dug this very embankment by hand.

Together, these panels turn the Navvy Bank from a pleasant walk into an outdoor classroom – a place where you can learn while you exercise.

A Hidden Treasure, Now Shared

As designer Pauraic Horgan noted when launching the Navvy Bank's visual identity in 2024:

"For many people, the Navvy Bank is very much an unknown part of the town – but one that holds significant importance both historically, as well as a location to be enjoyed for its scenery."

With these new information panels, that hidden treasure is now shared with everyone who passes by.
