National Tree Week

National Tree Week takes place each spring, and it's one of our favourite times of the year. It's a week when communities across Ireland come together to celebrate trees – not just for their beauty, but for everything they do for our air, our wildlife, and our wellbeing.

And here in Dundalk, we're proud to play our part.

Why trees matter to a Tidy Town?

A Tidy Town isn't just clean – it's green. Trees:

  • 🌿 Improve air quality – absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen

  • 🐦 Support wildlife – providing homes for birds, insects, and small mammals

  • 😊 Boost mental health – green streets are calmer, happier streets

  • ☀️ Provide shade – cooling our streets in warmer weather

  • 💧 Manage rainwater – reducing flooding in built-up areas

How Dundalk Tidy Towns gets involved?

During National Tree Week, our volunteers:

  • 🌱 Plant native trees in local green spaces, parks, and school grounds

  • 🍃 Care for young saplings planted in previous years

  • 📚 Share tree-themed information with residents and local schools

  • 🚶‍♂️ Lead gentle tree identification walks around Dundalk

  • 🗑️ Clear litter from around existing trees – because even the oldest oak deserves a tidy home

You don't need a garden to celebrate

Not everyone has space to plant a tree – and that's fine! You can still take part:

  • ✅ Adopt a street tree near your home and keep the area around it litter-free

  • ✅ Water young trees during dry spells

  • ✅ Simply spend a few minutes noticing the trees on your daily walk

  • ✅ Share a photo of your favourite Dundalk tree using #DundalkTidyTrees

What are the symptoms?

National Tree Week is a wonderful focus, but our commitment to trees lasts all year. Through our Adopt a Patch programme and regular maintenance work, Dundalk Tidy Towns is slowly but surely making our town greener, leafier, and more beautiful – one tree at a time.

Looking beyond the week

Young people, especially toddlers, are at most risk. They commonly handle soil and dirty objects. They are more likely to put their hands to their mouths, lick fingers, suck thumbs and eat without prior hand-washing.
